A Firefighter's Lessons for

Leading Through Crisis

Learn Situational Awareness

Learn Team Building

Learn Leadership

Learn Decisiveness

Hi, I'm Scott Simon

A crisis can happen to anyone, anywhere, at any time. A simple Tuesday morning can suddenly become a day you will never forget. Whether you lead a business, a team, or a family, how you handle a crisis has a major impact.

I’ve spent over 25 years on the fireground, helping people through all types of emergencies and difficult situations. I see people on their worst day.  I’ve learned many lessons through these experiences, and I want to share these lessons with you.

At 21, I fulfilled my life’s dream and became a professional firefighter. That was over 25 years ago. My career has provided many amazing experiences. I have been recognized by the city for bravery on two separate occasions, once in 2016, and again in 2023 when I received a Medal of Commendation. For years I was a part of the Aquatic Rescue Team, responding to water rescues throughout Southern Alberta.

I learned so much on this team, from swift water rescue,  to ice diving, to helicopter operations – even some high angle rescue work! Now as an experienced Captain and member of the Critical Incident Stress Management Team, I assist my peers in mentally processing difficult and traumatic events. I am also an Incident Management Systems Instructor, teaching new officers in managing complex scenes. I’ve responded to large events, small events and even some major events, such as the 2013 floods, Hub Oil and the Erlton Fire. I am still a fulltime firefighter, and love serving my community each day!

I am the father of two boys, and I love the adventure of being a parent. My family was fortunate enough to travel for a year in 2018 and 2019. We learned so much about ourselves and each other. We explored different countries and saw many things. We swam with whale sharks, went cage-diving with great white sharks and saw orangutans in the Borneo Jungle! I am very active in my community. I coach (RHL 2017/18 Coach of the year) and play hockey. I love camping, hiking, water skiing, and now, thanks to my kids, I am learning all about football.

I am excited to be partnering with The John Maxwell Team to empower leaders through thriving in crisis!
